What Is Malignant Melanoma?
Malignant melanoma is a dangerous form of skin cancer which can kill you. Malignant melanoma may appear as a mole that may be asymmetrical, have an irregular (not smooth) border, uneven coloring or be larger than a pencil eraser. Moles or other growths on your skin that have these characteristics should be examined promptly by Dr. Darst who can recommend an appropriate course of action. Any mole that you notice having or developing any of these changes needs to be examined immediately. If a melanoma is discovered early enough, simple excision cures it and may be life-saving.
How Is Malignant Melanoma Treated?
A skin biopsy may be performed so the growth can be diagnosed. If testing indicates the spot is cancerous, Dr. Darst will take steps to remove it. The procedure is usually done using a local anesthetic. Dr. Darst will remove the problem growth as well as some skin around and under the area. This helps ensure cancerous cells are eliminated from your body. If the growth is particularly large or deep, Dr. Darst may have to remove a large amount of tissue. In these cases, skin grafts may be required to close the wound.
You should recover quickly from the surgery. Swelling and bruising around the site are normal for several days following the procedure. Scars usually don’t occur unless the area removed was very large.
