May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
In honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Marc Darst participated in the 2016 Skin Cancer Screening hosted by Carolinas HealthCare System & Novant HealthCare Levine Cancer Institute.
It’s the one month out of the entire year that national attention is focused on skin cancer. This creates the perfect opportunity for us to educate the public on a much higher scale about the importance of early detection and how to SPOT Skin Cancer™.
It was a free skin cancer screening in our community, where we collectively influenced positive behavior change to improve public health, and, at the same time, clearly demonstrate how dermatologists offer a unique and significant value to the public.

American Academy of Dermatology Shade Structure Grant Program recipients
SCHAUMBURG, Ill.
To encourage communities across the country to protect themselves from the sun and prevent skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) today announced the 21 recipients awarded grants through its 2013 Shade Structure Grant Program. This announcement is in advance of the National Program for Playground Safety’s “Playground Safety Week,” which promotes safe playground areas, including the importance of shade. Since its founding in 2000, the Academy program has awarded more than 285 shade structure grants to organizations across the country. These shade structures provide shade for more than half a million individuals each day.
“Skin cancer is highly preventable as we know overexposure to the sun is one of the primary causes,” said board-certified dermatologist Dirk M. Elston, MD, FAAD, president of the Academy. “Seeking shade is a simple way to reduce your risk of skin cancer, and the Academy’s Shade Structure Grants provide children and their parents with more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors while being protected from the sun’s dangerous UV rays.”
More than 3.5 million skin cancers in more than 2 million people are diagnosed annually. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Incidence rates for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, have been increasing for at least 30 years. Melanoma is now the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old, and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old.
